Thread: Alternative Europe (after the Fourth Luxembourgish War)

Map Alternative Europe (after the Fourth Luxembourgish War)

Hi, this is my first attempt to draw an alternative history continental map. Before I had tried a subway map and a space map.

Originally, I had drawn the political borders but it seemed the map was not clear enough. I tried adding other things too, like roads, a key (the Atlantic looks naked), and a frame. But it was too much for my skills.

    What do you think?

Looks good! I like the way you have many different colours, yet they blend well together. Often too many colours can feel so garish, but you've avoided that with your slightly desaturated palette.

You could always add a compass rose in the Atlantic. It'll fill the space out and isn't too hard to make, or alternatively find a font or clipart that'll do it for you.

Thanks! I've tried with some flags.

Oh yeah, that fills the space nicely. Only thing I'd quibble about is the alignment. You have 'After the Fourth Luxembourgish war' centred under 'The Old World', then the flags are aligned to the left under the word 'After', but this puts them at odds with the main title. I realise you can't centre the flags under the main title because of lack of space, but the way it is now feels a little out of sync. Could you perhaps have three flags in a row, over four rows? You'd be able to centre everything more effectively that way, and it would fill up the empty space off the coast of Spain/Portugal a little better too. I'd also leave a slightly bigger gap between 'After the Fourth war...' and the first row of flags, but that's me nitpicking now!

    Your flags looks great.

Thank you for your suggestions. It looks tidier now with three columns.
All the flags are actual historic flags.

I realise now that I should have posted this in a Work In Progress forum.

That looks so much better! It's amazing how a couple of minor tweaks can improve the look overall.
